The days of submitting directly to search engines are pretty much dead.

The best way to get your site listed on the search engines is to exchange links with other similar websites. The more links you get, the more "popular" you become in the 'eyes' of the search engine. It can take up to 3-6 months or even a year to get listed on Google if your site is new.

Here are some recommended sites:

http://www.webmasterworld.com (Google and Yahoo employees post here)

http://www.seochat.com

http://www.searchenginewatch.com

http://www.pandia.com

http://www.searchenginenews.com (subscription based but these people are cutting edge, they know a lot)

You might also want to check the search engine blogs:

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/
http://blogs.msdn.com/msnsearch/
http://www.ysearchblog.com/
http://battellemedia.com/

Click on the left and right menu bar links on those blog sites to go to other blog sites.

Here's something interesting that Google is testing (alerting site owners when they are banned and emailing them on how to correct):

Just keep on reading and keep yourself informed on what the search engines are doing.
