Use of public_ftp

Use of public_ftp

Postby scottw » Wed Apr 22, 2009 9:59 am

Hi,
I want to know how to use the public_ftp folder so I can direct people to download items without logging in or needing a password. What instructions do I give, or can you point me to a tutorial [I haven't been able to find one].
Thanks,
Scott

Hello Scott,

Anonymous FTP is required to login without password. However, Anonymous FTP is disabled on most of our servers because of security reasons.

It's always better to create an FTP user account with password.

Hi, again:
I need some more help. Sometimes I need to send someone a link to a file I've uploaded to my website. I've tried sending myself a link a couple of times and it doesn't work. How can I set that up?

Hello Scott,

You can upload the file to your home directory(/home/user/public_html) or to any subdirectories under it.

This file can then be downloaded from http://domainname.com/filename.

If you can send a mail to support@canadianwebhosting.com with your domainname, we will be able to help you more with test files.

I am fully agree with randy with little amendment some servers are offering public file transfer protocol servers. they are still there. you can do this task with these servers.

Hello,

The public_ftp folder can be accessed using anonymous FTP user (no password). However, the anonymous FTP user is disabled in most of our servers due to security reasons.

You can better create an FTP account with access to a particular folder from cPanel. The folder can be accessed using the URL ftp://user@domainname:password@domainname (but the URL is mostly browser specific. It should work in firefox).
