Some helpful tips to use remember when registering your domain.

- Always use your business name as the domain name. Your visitors should have only one name to remember - be it your business or your domain name.

- Your domain name should be short and/or easy to remember. The maximum character allowed in a domain is 67. Domain names that are short will make it easier for your visitors to visit you repeatedly.

- In conjunction with #2, avoid using more than 4 words in your domain name. For example, avoid www.lookingforcheapcomputers.com. It is both difficult to remember and type. However it is increasingly difficult to register shorter domain names.

- On top of registering a domain using your business name, register another domain name that is related to your business: For example, register www.dell.com and register www.computers.com. You can point both domain names to the same website.

- If you have a domain name that is easily misspelled, you should also register the misspelled domain name. Why would you want to do this? Your visitor will still get to your site when they misspelled your domain name.

- Try not to use "to" or "for" in your domain name, as it can be confusing to your visitors and may type "2" or "4".

- Avoid using numbers in your domain name. Similar to #6, your visitors may type in the number in full instead of using the numeric key.

- If you need to use abbreviations, use only those that made sense and/or easy to remember.

- Avoid using hyphenated domain names. The advantage of hyphenated domain names is that it is easier to spot when printed. The downside is when the domain name is communicated verbally. To really make sure the person you talk to get to your website, you have to pronounce it as "www dot institute hyphen of hyphen space hyphen technology dot com" as compared to pronouncing it "www dot institute of space technology dot com".

This is a great post. People often fail to put enough time and energy into choosing the right business and domain name. Many people try to choose something that sounds cool when it comes to a business or domain name. They fail to realize the power in choosing the right URL for their online presence and business. If someone doesn't own a brick and mortar business and are looking to create an online presence the domain name chosen is an essential aspect of being able to drive traffic to that website more easily. Try to purchase a domain name that targets your keyword and market if at all possible. The only exception to this rule would be if you plan on building a specific brand in which case you should purchase a domain name based on that brand. Great post, thanks for the awesome information.
