I assume I would need to register a second domain name, then create the account and point the DNS accordingly. Is that correct?

An addon domain is not the same thing as DNS. Addon domain is being given the opportunity to host multiple domains on one hosting account.

Correct, you will need a registered domain name for the add-on domain. Then, change the DNS on the add-on domain pointing to the same server.
If you are on CA Value or above, you can create add-on on the Cpanel at "Domains" section.

If you are on Windows package, you can request on the Billing Management Center or contact CWH sales for add-on domain. We charge $5/month for each add-on domain on Windows accounts.
