Obama promises to help coastal communities recover, defends actions

GRAND ISLE, La. - Efforts to siphon off oil gushing from a ruptured deep-sea wellhead in the Gulf of Mexico were starting to work, U.S officials said Saturday, while President Barack Obama defended his handling of the environmental crisis.

The containment cap that British energy giant BP clamped over the ruptured wellhead collected about 6,000 barrels of oil on Friday, Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen said at a briefing in Theodore, Ala. He told reporters the effort was working "with caveats", although it was still only collecting part of the leak.

On its Twitter feed, BP said that "a total of 6,077 barrels of oil was collected" on June 4. "Improvement in oil collection is expected over the next several days," the company said.

Now they are saying that are capturing at least 50% - a lot but still not enough. What really is astonishing is that the amount of oil leaked into the golf so far is the equivalent of 1 days usage in the U.S. It says a lot about oil dependency.

Yeah it really makes you think that if all the oil spilled so far is close to 1 day of consumption, how much of that we are burning and turning into air polution.

Even they can capture 100% of spilled oil the environmental damages cannot be recovered in short time.
