Using an FTP client to upload files.

One of the tools that every website owner should have is an FTP tool. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, and FTP client lets you to easily upload your website’s content from your end to your site seamlessly. Without an FTP client, you would need to upload all of your content individually, which would take a very long time and would require a lot of effort on your behalf. If you use an FTP client than you’ll be able to upload hundreds of files simultaneously without having to upload each file manually. If you’re running several websites, or one that requires lots of files, then you’ll most definitely need to use an FTP client.

Which FTP client should I use?

Although there are many FTP clients from fully license to free clients which are readily available on the Internet. One such FTP client is FileZilla which is free and is fairly poplar with people all around the world. However, just keep in mind that free FTP clients may not have as many options available compared to a paid FTP solution. But you can do pretty much anything you’d like with a free FTP client such as FileZilla.

Using your FTP client to a make backup.

Just as you can upload files using your FTP client, you can also download files using your FTP client as well. This means you can backup your entire website by downloading it onto your hard drive. Although there are easier ways to backup a website, this is one of the fundamental ways to do it. Simply click on the main folder of your website on the right side of the interface, then right-click it and click download. It may take a while to download all of the files, but the wait is worth it since you’ll be able to restore your website at any time if you’d like.

What is SFTP, and how do I use it to transfer files?

SFTP, or secure FTP, is a program that uses SSH to transfer files. Unlike standard FTP, it encrypts both commands and data, preventing passwords and sensitive information from being transmitted in the clear over the network. It is functionally similar to FTP, but because it uses a different protocol, you can't use a standard FTP client to connect to an SFTP server, nor can you connect to an FTP server with a client that supports only SFTP.

SFTP client's extra capabilities compared to an FTP client include resuming interrupted transfers, directory listings, and remote file removal and include date/timestamp provision.

FTP is an acronym for File Transfer Protocol. As the name suggests, FTP is used to transfer files between computers on a network. You can use FTP to exchange files between computer accounts, transfer files between an account and a desktop computer, or access online software archives. Keep in mind, however, that many FTP sites are heavily used and require several attempts before connecting.
